The term "Contemporary Bubblegum" refers to the more recent bubblegum dance acts from 2004 onwards. Two well-known examples of "Contemporary Bubblegum" are Ch!pz from the Netherlands and Banaroo from Germany. Compared with "Traditional Bubblegum", Contemporary Bubblegum is much less tongue-in-cheek. For example, bubblegum dance projects of the Contemporary era no longer have the silly bright costumes and multicolored hair that made Traditional Bubblegum artists so recognizable. Instead, Contemporary Bubblegum artists take on a more 'professional' look, while still maintaining their fun and friendly image. While many of the features of Traditional Bubblegum remain, such as the fun bouncy and sometimes childish lyrics, the sound is typically more "pop-based." The tempo of Contemporary Bubblegum is also typically much slower, compared to earlier acts such as Aqua. Probably the most crucial change for Contemporary Bubblegum is the extinction of the Traditional high-pitched female vocalists. No longer do females transform their voices into high-pitched squeaking machines, which was practically required for a Traditional Bubblegum act, and Contemporary artists managed to create a more 'natural' sound. Males also take on a bigger role in Contemporary Bubblegum music and, unlike in Traditional Bubblegum, they tend to have a larger, if not equal, vocal role in songs as the girls. This is one of the key changes since males in Traditional Bubblegum typically only sang supporting vocals and rapping. |
