Bubblegum Dancer / Encyclopedia / Artists / Yummie

Yummie is a Swedish Organic Bubblegum dance group from Haninge, outside Stockholm. The group consisted of: Qute (Petra Garnås), Zed (Teddy Gustavsson, and Maestro X (Göran Florén).

Yummie is most well-known for the song "Bubblegum" which was the only song by the group that was released as a single. It has been suggested that the group sounds like a composition of Aqua and Ace of Base, with some songs being more pop-based than dance. In 2000, Yummie released their debut album "Sweet & Sour". All the songs on this album were published by Stockhouse Records.

Shine is a Traditional Bubblegum dance artist created by producers and members of Yummie, Maestro X and Zed.

NEWS: In March 2009 Yummie announced that they were returning for their 10 Year Anniversary. According to their new Official Myspace page, there will be new songs, new mixes, unreleased songs, the same members, and an all new look! The official Web site is planned to be re-launched in April this year.

Unique Style
Yummie fits into a sub-genre of Bubblegum dance known as "Organic Bubblegum". Yummie uses more 'natural' instruments and foley recordings, rather than computer generated sounds, to create their unique beats. Such instruments include wooden drums and metal tapers, and instead of computer-generated synths, a type of gas is used (e.g. the beginning piece of "Bubblegum (Extended)."

Yummie is different to typical bubblegum dance music in that the lead female vocalist has a deeper more mature voice, and not the high-pitched-barbie-doll voices of artists such as Aqua, Toy-Box and Smile.dk.

Zed's Biography
Below is Zed's biography, as it appeared on their official Web site in 2000-2002.

Profession: Songwriter, Singer, Producer
Hi my name is Zed and I am the "clown" in this group. OK I'm still serious but what a heck... I just love all kind of music. My favorite Yummie song is our latest song "Get out of my face". We wrote this song for a few years ago but in a total different style. One day it popped up in our head again and we thought it could fit to another idea that we had. Finally we changed the chorus and voila....

I also like computers and design. I've made a few CD covers to other artists. And of course our own, I always have the last opinion how our videos and posters will turn out in the end. Me and Maestro also do music to other artists. As you can se on this picture [note: there was a photo on the Web site before it went offline] I like Dalmatians, that's because I have one of my own, his name is Pepe. He's a really cool dude. :) I've been into music and showbiz for as long as I can remember. In the past I use to be a part of a show-group that used to perform on clubs around Sweden. Recently I was on a vacation to Barbados, I just love the Island and their music (Socca and Reggae). I liked it so bad that some of our songs are very influenced by that kind of music. So even our latest song. I really like the other guys in the band and we are real good friends in private as we are on stage. We just like the fun in life and have no attention to do "deep" music. We just love to party and if you like us I think your into that to.

SEE YA AROUND!!! ZED

Maestro X 's Biography
Sadly Maestro X's biography was not included on the Yummie site. It might have been there at the beginning but Archive.org did not spider it. :-( If anyone has it please contact us.

Profession: Songwriter, Keyboard, Producer

Name Confusion
Sometimes the group is mistakenly called "Sweet'n'Sour" (which is actually the name of another eurodance group), and the name of their album is thought to be "Yummie." This is because the name of the artist is displayed in big letters and the name of the album in small letters - different to how most album art is layed out.

Key Dates

The cover of Yummie's rare single "Poppa Joe" .

The following dates were taken from the Yummie Web site, which was closed down in 2002.

  • Oct. 2000 Sweden Working on a new secret project...
(Note: sorry I can't give any information on this, but whatever it was I don't think it was released.)
  • Nov. 2000 Sweden Working on the next single...
Note: the next single was "Get Out Of My Face," which was released but is very rare.

Get Out Of My Face
"Get Out Of My Face" was released as a promo single in 2001. In an interview, Zed and Maestro X revealed that the style of the song is much rougher compared to the other Yummie songs. The song was written by the members of Yummie some years before their album release, and only in 2002 did the members pull it back out of the cupboard, update the chorus, and release it. They are very proud of it, and state that it is one of their favourite Yummie songs.

Interesting Info

  • Stefan Andersson was the main mixer of Yummie and mixed all of their songs.
  • The ideas for the majority of Yummie's songs were thought of by Jonas Wisslander.
  • Kenta, Inka & Tony designed the CD cover and allowed Yummie remake the 70s song "Poppa Joe" which was originally by a group called "The Sweet."
  • The hand that held the banana on the Sweet & Sour cover belonged to Marie.
  • A music video for the song "Bubblegum" was created by Odds & Evens Productions. You can view it here.
  • Yummie did a cover of "Who Let The Dogs Out" 2 years before it was a worldwide hit. Their record company didn't think it would work and didn't release the song.
  • "Jolly Roger", is an unreleased song by Yummie about pirates.

History
The following History was lifted from the old Yummie Web site at www.yummie.nu. Please note that it is out of date, and was written in 2001/02 so promises for new releases etc are no longer apparent. I've purposely left spelling mistakes in as that is how it appeared on the original Web site.

Yummie have been a group for four years now and we have had so much fun trough the years. From the beginning we were four members but now days we're only three. In the beginning we thought that we should have a story about that we where some aliens from outer space, but soon we thought that was silly. Our first album was a lot of euro disco and we probable looked to much at the bands that where popular back then like Aqua and Vengaboys (Listen to Bubblegum for you're own choice). We had problems to find out our own sound but we have always have that tender. For awhile we where into the Caribbean soccer sound and picket a lot of influence from that kind of of music, (Make My Day & Ay Ay Ay for an example.) Still these days we pick some influence from that kind of music. Yummies music have all time have the spirit to be happy and fun and will still be in the future. Last year we thought that it would be funny to do a cover and Zed had a crush on The Sweet when he was younger. We thought that a cover ("Poppa Joe") from them would be funny since nobody yet had done that.

Yummie's album "Sweet & Sour" have only been released in Japan so far but a few other countries have the intension to do the same.
-Why these alias? Some people asks. Well our real names are so booring and way to hard for people arond the globe to prononse, so we sat down and thought that we should have some alias. We became thinking of the last letters in the alphabet (X,Y,Z and for no reseon the letter Q) Q went to be "Qute" (Cute), Z became "Zed" and X became "Maestro X" (Y became "Mr Young", but as we said erlier he is no longer in the band.)
Yummie have been released all around the world with more or less succes. But since this "project" intend to be a fun thing for us in the first place, we never have the intension to be a world wide big band. And still we're doing this for fun and it still is! So you have to watch out for forthcomming records from this silly little group.

Now Yummie is back with their new single called "Get out of my face". In a total new style. Still they have the carribian influence but in a ruffer and harder style. They also got a new producer and a new engineer. So everything feels more proffesional this time. Yummie come from a suburb to Stockholm. -It feels great when groups from your surrondings go well in the music buissnes. Our neighbourhood is full of different music styles, like Hip Hop, Pop, Punk, Rock and more.

The members of Yummie have a history in different bands trough the years. Zed started to release records in -92 with the band "Spot the difference" and Maestro allready in -89 in the band "Avalon".Qute have perfomed with several livebands and she is a real alround singer, all from soft ballads to heavy rock.
Yummie have now toured around in Sweden for a few years and soon we're about to hit the Estonian ground.
-It will be real fun! They say.
-And we love all you people out there who still belive in us! Love Yummie...
