Smile.DK - Future GirlsReviewed by DJ Haze and posted on January 15, 2010
It's no secret that Smile.DK quickly became one of my favorite bubblegum dance artists and helped launch me into the endless journey down 'bubblegum road'. Alot of the songs that helped make me a fan of them are on this very CD, in fact if you look at my Top 10 songs for Smile.DK you'll find more songs from this album than any other. So many masterpieces in one place, it's like a walk down the Bubblegum Hall of Fame. There are more perfect 10/10 songs on this album than possibly any other bubblegum dance album period. It is very difficult for me to hand a song a 10/10 as I value that score highly. Future Girls was their second release and really picked up the 'pace' from the first album Smile.
My favorite Smile.DK songs are the really fast ones, and this album is packed with them. The title track "Future Girls" is a bit more dramatic of a choice however, and gets my vote as a hit because of the way it starts out. It really jumps on you once it gets going, with such a slow theatrical sounding opening then BAM! they let you know they "Are the Future Girls!" The verses are well sung and are very silky-smooth. Overall the style is more 'under control' dance song in the sense that has more serious undertones.
"Doo-Be-Di-Boy" is an example of a song that was over-looked slightly when I first heard it, because frankly some other songs were driving me insane (in a good way) at first more than this song. This mistake was realized eventually, because it is more like other fast-paced treats on this album than I realized at first. The Smile.DK Japanese theme, which has become quite the trademark indeed for them, has it's hand prints all over the beats and some of the lyrics. The best part of this song for me is the little "Uh" shouts that the Samurai-of-Smile.DK's-eye will make; almost like he is saying"darn right I am your Doo-Be-Di-Boy".
One of my all-time favorite songs "Dancing All Alone" is where I'll head next. One of the faster Smile.DK songs of all for sure. What sets this song apart from any other Smile.DK really is the 'echoey' style they take advantage of throughout. The omni-present "o-e-o-e-ohs" are absolutely mind-blowing, I'm almost wish this style was used in more Smile.DK tracks to be honest. I love how "Poor Me" their vocals sound in the verses, and then full fledged "Whoa is Me" attitude in the choruses. Who wouldn't do anything to make these girls happy when hearing this?
I can't forget about my #1 Smile.DK song of all-time can I? Well that song certainly is "Kissy Kissy" and you will find it on this album! Out of Control Cuteness is the name of the game here. They really should put a Surgeon's General's warning on the album next to this song, as far as how much your teeth will hurt if you listen to this sugary treat too much. Bring on the Dentist! Man, the Japanese koto style beats that snake back-n-forth through your soul at the very beginning makes me die and come back to life everytime. All this would make you think how can it get any better? Easy. The lyrics make you wanna suck on your thumb in disbelief. They just roll off the tongue, and the chorus doesn't let up, it just goes into it, "Like can I have a minute to breathe?" and Smile.Dk of course per-usual says "Nope, Keep the beat going!".
"Dragonfly" is an under-rated masterpiece for me, but crazy hot. Some of my favorite Smile.DK lyrics ever can be heard here. The bridge starting with "You tell me things that I never knew...so-what-am-I-supposed-to-do" is so well-done (how they emphasis each word in that second line) and leads up to such a beautiful chorus. The synth explosion right after the chorus is done, has enough power behind it create an alternative-fuel source.
Another song I really like from this album is "Do You?". I love the little melody right before a verse or chorus starts, sounds like you are in a Bubblegum Dancer Arcade. It sounds so lovely vocally; with the lyrics you want to answer her beckoning, "Yes I love you Smile.DK!"
Overall Future Girls would be the first album I would suggest for anybody who wants to clear all the sadness out of their life and start SMILING.
