Holly Dolly
Holly Dolly is a project created in Italy to promote ringtones for Jamba, a ringtone company that originated in Germany. Like most projects connected with Jamba, the project is centered around a fictional character. In this case, the character is a donkey girl named Holly Dolly, who dreams of becoming a big star.
The project was created by DJ Satomi (real name Simone Bocchino), Luca Ontino, and Valentina Dante, and produced by Simone Gritti, at the studio Ipnotika. Vocals were performed by Deborah Baratelli, under the psuedonym Dee Bee.
In 2006, the single "Dolly Song (Ieva's Polka)" was released. The song was a cover of the 1995 song "Ievan Polkka" by Loituma, itself a cover of an old Finnish folk song that they made their own by adding scat vocals to it. The song was recorded in reference to the Loituma version of the song having recently gained memetic popularity, through a short animation called "Leekspin". The animation consisted of a clip from the anime "Bleach", where the character Orihime is spinning a leek, looped over audio from Loituma's "Ievan Polkka". "Dolly Song" makes reference to the meme by featuring a girl spinning a leek in the background at one point of the video and on some versions of the single cover.
Later in 2006, the album "Pretty Donkey Girl" was released. The album consisted of both cover songs and original songs written by the project's creators. The album spawned one more single, "Don't Worry Be Happy" (a cover of a song by Bobby McFerrin). Music videos were made for the two singles, as well as the song "Lollipop" (a cover of a song by The Champs), "Holly Samba" (a cover of "Samba De Janeiro" by Bellini), and a megamix.
Holly Dolly's website was removed in 2008, suggesting the project is abandoned.
