Longhorn Interview
Michael Skouboe from Denmark is a music producer and song writer best known for his work with Ni-Ni and Bambee.
What bubblegum dance projects have you been involved with?
The released bubblegum dance projects I was involved with counts, Hit'n'Hide, Miss Papay, Bambee. and Ni-Ni.....
Do you have a favourite? Which are you most proud of?
No I have a lot of favorites, but of all bubblegum projects? Well it has to be Ni-Ni..
What got you into music production?
Oh!! I have always had a great interest in music, and back when I was 14 years old I started playing the keyboard and it kind of just took of from there.
The majority of bubblegum dance styled music comes from Scandinavian countries. Do you know why it has such a huge focus in this area, and why is it mostly popular in Japan?
I'm not sure but I think it all started with Swedish Ace of Base, who was signed on a Danish lable, and in the wake of their succes Danish Me and My came out, who in my oppinion was the first real BGD and as we all know they also enjoyed quite some succes in Japan, so I think it was obvious that the Scandinavians had a talent of writing that kind of music..
What happened to Ni-Ni after the release of her album "Mermaid"? Why did she not release anymore music?
Ni-Ni's first release went quite well in Japan which was the only place it was released actually. Hmm! by the time we started on the second album the timing for BGD in Japan was running out, and the matter of fact that the European countries had already moved on past BGD, made us come to the conclusion not to finish the work on the second release.
Were any singles released by Ni-Ni? If so, what? If not, what would have been the first likely choice?
No, atleast not officially. Japan never release singles at that time, but the hit 1234007 came out on several Japanese compilation albums, followed by Dabbi Doo, The Message and Spacy Crazy Girl.
Was there a second album in the works? If so, was there a working title?
Oh Yes.. A second album "with the working title: Bubbling was in the making, but as I said earlier: was never finished do to the lack of interest in BGD music.
What is your personal favourite song by Ni-Ni?
Honestly I have two favorits by Ni-ni. the hit 1234007, and a song, titled: Never Say Never. Which was recorded for the never released, second album.
You produced Bambee's second album, "Fairytales". What is your favourite song from this release?
Man I haven't heard that one in many years, so I have to addmit that I had to dust of the album, and listen to all the tracks, to remember.. but I think my favorit is Online..
What was it like working with Desirée? Linnea Handberg said that she is very sweet.
Absolutely!! I have to agree with Linnea. Desirée is an awesome and very very sweet girl. And I have to mention: She was very dedicated and hard working, and have my deepest respect.
Was there plans for a third album, or further releases, with Bambee? Why did it not happen?
Man, I really don't know, but my guess is no! The timing issue was at work here too.
If given the opportunity, would you produce bubblegum dance again in the future?
Yes nodoubtly, it would be like welcomming an old friend, but I'm sure when it comes back it will be in another form, and with my almost 10 years away from the genre doing all kinds of other stuff, I will have a lot to offer to the new BGD music.
What are some of your current hobbies and interests?
Same as it has always been "HA HA" Music production, and song writing..
You were involved in the production of Hit'n'Hide's "On A Ride". What is your favourite song from this release?
I never had any doubt that Space Invater would become a hit, since it was my favorite from the start, but I also had another favorite and it was True Love.
There are always some unreleased songs where there is a music project. Would you be able to reveal to the fans the titles of some of the unreleased tracks of Ni-Ni, Bambee and Hit'n'Hide? =)
I don't know if there was any leftovers from Hit'n'Hide and Bambee. But with Ni-Ni we have a few titles like. Bubbling, Dam Do Dam Dam Dam, Never Say Never, and When I'm Dreaming.
And lastly, do you have a favourite candy?
Candy.. Hmm let me think --- If I'm only alowed to mention one? It must be MAOAM, German candy I think :-)
