Bubblegum Dancer counts down the Top 20 bubblegum dance projects ever created.

20 - Yummie

Yummie’s unique sound was first heard in 1999 with the release of their catchy tune “Bubblegum.” The group had a fresh take on bubblegum dance, with a production style and instruments that weren’t previously used in the genre, and people later described them as a cross between Ace of Base and Aqua. Their album “Sweet & Sour” (2000) is riddled with happy, campy and cheesy pop/dance tunes.

19 - Tiggy

An early project of Hartmann & Langhoff, Tiggy is best known for her fantasy themed bubblegum dance songs, that focus on princes, dragons, and magic spells. Her biggest hits include “Simsalabim” and “Abracadabra” (which funnily enough mean the same thing), and her first single released way back in 1996 called “Ring A Ling.” Tiggy’s background in musical theatre makes her a fantastic vocalist, and her talent is shown off in the beautiful ballads that appear on her albums.

18 - Ni-Ni

A project by Danish producer Longhorn, the 2001 release of Ni-Ni’s debut album “Mermaid” probably came a little late for it to see the success that it deserved. That doesn’t mean that the songs are any less excellent, with 5-star production and singing by Nynne Qvortrup. For fans of Bambee and other traditional bubblegum dance projects, Ni-Ni’s “Mermaid” is one of the best out there.

17 - Dominoo

Swedish group Dominoo was previously known as “West Inc.” before changing their name and taking the plunge as a bubblegum dance band. They had two successful singles, “Run Run Away” and “My Hero,” for which they are best known, however it is their 2001 album “Episodes” that landed them in our list for the Top 20 Bubblegum dance projects of all time. With 16 unique songs, “Episodes” is one of the most complete bubblegum dance albums ever created, with excellent production, song writing, and vocal talent.

16 - Jenny Rom

Jenny Rom is the creation of Italian production house SAIFAM, and is shrouded in mystery in terms of who the Jenny Rom vocalists are. She is best known for her fast paced bubblegum dance songs and recognisable high-pitched vocals singing often goofy and nonsensical lyrics. The extremely catchy, well-produced music and often bizarre music of Jenny Rom has made her a cult classic in the bubblegum dance genre, and is our choice for #15 in our count for the top bubblegum projects of all time.

15 - Me & My

No top Bubblegum dance list would be complete without a mention of Me & My, who are probably the first ever bubblegum dance project ever created. Made up of Georgi sisters Sussane and Pernille, Me & My released their debut album in 1995, which featured some of the biggest hits of the 90s - the infectious “Dub-i-Dub” and “Baby Boy.” Me & My’s released 3 albums and a greatest hits album between 1995 and 2007, with their work eventually straying away from the bubblegum dance genre.

14 - Dr. Bombay

The first of 3 Jonny Jakobsen bubblegum dance aliases, “Dr. Bombay” was the most famous. Coming from Sweden, Jakobsen created the Dr. Bombay character as a parody of Indian culture. His culturally stereotypical lyrics caused quite a stir, particularly in India when the authorities were apparently thinking of suing him but dismissed the idea when their lawyers told them they couldn’t sue someone for simply being “annoying.” Dr. Bombay’s hits, who were produced by Robert Uhlmann of Smile.dk fame, skyrocketed in the charts, and Dr. Bombay became infamous in the europop scene. His songs remain today some of the most memorable hits of the 90s.

13 - Caramell

Singing in their native language, Swedish bubblegum dance group Caramell are best known for their hit single “Caramelldansen” which became an internet sensation when it was sped up and linked with a dancing anime girl. A spinoff group of Caramell called “Caramella Girls” has been launched and are currently releasing bubblegum dance music today.

12 - Hit'n'Hide

Coming in at #12 on our list is Hit’n’Hide from Denmark. Their 1998 single “Space Invaders,” produced by the talented Johnny Jam & Delgado, was a huge hit all over Europe, with many people linking them with the already popular Aqua. Hit’n’Hide had 2 album releases, the first “On A Ride” in 1998 featured a very traditional bubblegum sound, and the second “Hit’n’Hide” in 2000 a more updated bubblegum trance styled album.

11 - Miss Papaya

The Miss Papaya project was created by Linnea Handberg to coincide with the success of Aqua and other bubblegum dance projects currently taking off in Denmark. Originally not intended to be taken seriously, the Papaya project took off after the success of the original single “Hero.” American popstar Madonna, whose daughter was a huge Miss Papaya fan, invited Handberg to America and praised her on her music writing. Miss Papaya’s music became widely popular due to it’s use in the popular Dance Dance Revolution game series.

10 - Daze

9 - Blue Monster & Bikki Girl

Remaining unreleased for many years, Blue Monster & Bikki was one of those “easter-egg” bubblegum dance projects whose debut album didn’t get a proper release until many years later. Produced by the talented Adam Edelmann from Sweden and headlined by Anna Clara Modin (Bikki Girl), the Blue Monster project is said to be inspired by a combination of Aqua and Sesame Street. Aimed and children, but then not, Blue Monster saw some controversy with their 2002 music video for Pata Pata, which featured the Blue Monster character in some rather explicit and definitely not kid-friendly scenes. Regardless of the music video, the Blue Monster project has proven to be one of the top bubblegum dance projects of all time, with infectious, catchy, and ultra cheesy bubblegum dance/pop that will be sure to please any bubblegum dance fan.

8 - Ch!pz

Ch!pz was a breath of fresh air for the bubblegum dance genre when they first appeared in 2003 with their single “Cowboy.” Headlined by four attractive young people, Ch!pz took the bubblegum dance genre in a new direction, with a clear focus on children as their target audience. With outstanding production led by Jay Vandenberg and Hartmann & Langhoff, Ch!pz sky rocketed up the charts all over Europe, and more and more artists chose to jump on the bandwagon and dance music groups aimed at children.

7 - Vengaboys

One of the best known and top selling bubblegum eurodance groups of all time, the Vengaboys became a household name in the late 90s with their catchy tunes “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!,” “We’re Going to Ibiza” and “We Like To Party.” Their songs topped charts all around the world, and Vengaboys became one of the most influential dance groups of the 90s. 5 - Bambee

One of the most instantly recognisable bubblegum dance singers, Desirée Sparre-Enger from Norway burst onto the scene as Bambee in 1997 with her cute song “Candy Girl.” However, it was her later songs “Typical Tropical” and “Bumble Bee” that really grabbed the interest of the public. Both her albums “On Ice” and “Fairytales” feature top-notch production and writing from some of bubblegum dance’s best artists, such as Longhorn, Honeycutt, and Linnea Handberg (Miss Papaya). Drop-dead gorgeous and with a naturally high singing voice, Bambee is perfect for bubblegum dance, and secures her place as #5 on our list of the Top 20 Bubblegum Dance Projects of all Time.

4 - Cartoons

Coming from Denmark, the Cartoons were inspired by 1950s American rock and roll culture, with many of their songs being bubblegum eurodance covers of old rockabilly hits, giving their music the nickname “technobilly.” Selling over 2 million albums, Cartoons are one of the most successful Danish bands ever, and are best known for their 1998 hit “Witch Doctor” which peaked at #2 in the UK singles charts.
